Essential Bluegrass Fiddle Licks with Mei Lin Heirendt (Broken Compass Bluegrass)
The foundation of bluegrass fiddling is built on “licks,” or short phrases that can easily be applied to the vast catalog of tunes and songs. The memorization of licks helps expand repertoire, improvisation skills, and introduces new finger patterns that will enhance creativity and familiarity on the instrument.
This one hour workshop is open to all levels and will include a selection of licks that get progressively harder- so there will be something for everyone! The goal is for everyone to walk away understanding how to incorporate these licks into their own solos and be inspired to come up with their own.
My teaching style is largely based on repetition and learning by ear, though I will provide sheet music to take home. I’ll also give students a chance to record a voice memo towards the end of class so that they can continue listening and working on the material on their own. I’m looking forward to meeting a bunch of fellow fiddlers and sharing in the excitement of this genre and community!
